JamBuddy is an accompaniment tool for musicians to use during practice sessions or just for fun. It will play the chord progressions for a tune at whatever tempo you want while you play lead breaks over them. 50 popular bluegrass tunes are included with the app and you can add as many more as you like. And it's not limited to bluegrass. It will work with reggae, rock, country or any other style of music. You can select either mandolin or guitar accompaniment. JamBuddy will keep playing all night and never complain that you are hogging the spotlight.

iPhone OS 3.0 tested

I made this becasue I've used a number of CDs in the past to try to provide backing tracks during practice sessions. But you can't slow those down (or speed them up) without expensive software. JamBuddy will back you up at whatever speed you want and you can get it for a song (no pun intended). The tempo is saved individually for each tune so you can use it as a speed trainer. The 50 tunes included with the app will also keep you busy for a while. Headphones will give the highest quality sound.

Adding chord progressions is easy. You enter the chord you want played for each beat. In 3/4 time for one measure of G you would enter three G chords, which will be played boom-chuck-chuck. Here is a simple example in 4/4 time which would be played boom-chuck, boom-chuck.

Chords for tune:

JamBuddy will play an A section twice (because of the Loop) with one measure of G and one measure of A. Then it will switch to the B section and play that twice because of the Loop at the end. After it plays the B section the second time it will go back to the top and repeat. Tunes can be as long as you want with as many sections as you want. Just structure your Loops the way you want them and JamBuddy will do the right thing.

Great for Learning Fiddle Tunes!

I'm loving this app. If you play bluegrass fiddle, mandolin, or guitar and want to work on your fiddle tunes, it's your perfect Jam Buddy. So much better than learning on your own with no accompaniment. I look forward to practicing with it now, and my playing has improved noticeably. I first tried the lite version and it was frustrating becuz it turned off as soon as the screen went to sleep--about one minute. But once I bought the full version, no problem, you can play as long as you like and it doesn't seem to wear the battery down much. If you play old-time fiddle tunes, you might find that there aren't quite as many favorites among the 50 included tunes, but there are some, so it's still good. And you can add your own--one chord per beat (e.g., you add four A chords for one measure of A). I found it easy to do but sometimes it doesn't save it for some reason...so you have to be persistent and re-enter it. That's why I didn't give 5 stars. I also wish the control for changing tempo was a little more sensitive as sometimes I have to keep trying to move it until it moves or moves where I want it. Otherwise, FANTASTIC learning tool! Thanx!

Well done only missing a few things

This app is great. It has helped me improve my improvisation dramatically, and it has made songwriting much quicker with the ability to input chord ideas. The only thing missing is the ability to add a rest so the rythm can be manipulated and inversion chords in the chord choices. Other than that this is a great app.

Nice app

Nice app, good for providing steady beat & chords for practicing breaks and improv.

Entering chords for new tunes can be a bit tricky. When editing a tune, default should be to add chord to end of list, not beginning.

Another nice feature would be key changes-- if you change the key on the setup for the app to automatically change all the chords.

Overall a good value, useful tool for just a couple of bucks.
